Training for license

Typical dream: i want to be a captain!

Well, there is a way. Go to naval school, study several years, pass examination, get an internship on a ship as a mate and work your way in some years up to the captain. Unfortunately Rocket Science Sailing cannot help you along this path more than to cherry-up "Go, Go, you can do it!"

Or.... there is a "light" version of the dream. I want to be a captain of a yacht! A Skipper. Here we can help a lot!

First should be mentioned that nearly every country with a coast has own procedure how to gain a license of yacht skipper. It might be RYA Yachtmaster of GB, SKS in Germany or FFVoile in France. Being located in Germany Rocket Science Sailing can help you to get a german sailing license, SKS.

To obtain SKS sailing license there are several steps to do. Pass theoretical examination with questions about navigation, seamanship, law, weather. As well one needs to meet medical requirements (absence of dyschromotopsia). Many sailing schools and clubs are specializing in this and provide various courses, over weekend, or crash-course or as a flexible arrangements over several weeks. Here you can choose any suitable for you.

One should differ "i want to have a sailing license" and "i want to be a good skipper" Rocket Sciece Sailing does NOT help you to learn the theory of sailing and just passing a sailig exam. We HELP you to be a good sailor, a good skipper!

In order to became a good skipper one needs to do only one thing: SAIL, SAIL and SAIL! And here Rocket Science Sailing can help a lot!

Our recepie: SAIL a LOT! , preferably with Rocket Science Sailing. In this way you get your needed miles on water as another requirement for the practical exam (at least 300 nm), you you will gain confidence in steering and controling a yacht, you will properly evaluate weather and choose best sailing route.

    1. Start with some sailing trip of category "Sailing impressions" , bess but not necessary with POGO or Class40 yachts. There you get basic sailing practice, you will learn how to operate sails, how to trim them to getbest performance. You will learn how to select a suitable sails depending on weather and sea conditions. As it is an active sailing trip, you will learn a lot about practical aspects such as collision avoidance rules, how to pass TSS, how to navigate at night and and and.

    2. As a next step we suggest you to join to our "Skipper training" trip, where we dedicate the whole trip to mastering the yacht in harbour. As one says, "ocean forgives a lot of mistakes, harbour - not a singe one!". We practice work with ropes, lines. We study and practice differnt parking/starting maneouvers, compare their pluses and minuses. We practice passing locks as well train differnt "non-standard" sailing maneouvers such as "lying a hull", "heaving to", "quck drop", "Muenich maneouver"

    3. And finally, for the actual practical SKS exam, join to our SKS Preparation trip where you master the Mann-Over-Board "Q-Wende" maneouver in order to pass the exam. All other parts of the examination such as control of sails, harbour maneuvers, you learned already before. Hence that will be easy-peasy for you.

Of course, passing exam doesn't make you automaticaly a profi. But with these steps, we offer , you gain all the needed confidence and ability to take a yacht and crew and lead them safely through unchartered waters
